Pap Smear Test

A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a simple, routine screening procedure used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It is primarily performed to identify early signs of cervical cancer or pre-cancerous changes that could lead to cervical cancer if left untreated.

Why It's Important:

  • The collected cells are sent to a laboratory for analysis under a microscope.
  • The test typically takes only a few minutes and is minimally uncomfortable.

Recommended Frequency:

  • Women aged 21-65 are advised to undergo the test every 3-5 years, depending on age, health history, and results of previous tests.
  • Women over 30 may opt for a Pap smear combined with an HPV test for greater accuracy.

Preparation Tips:

  • Avoid sexual intercourse, douching, or using vaginal products 48 hours before the test.
  • Schedule the test when you are not menstruating for the most accurate results.
