NPL Test (Nasopharyngeal Laryngoscopy)

The Nasopharyngeal Laryngoscopy (NPL) Test is a quick, safe, and minimally invasive procedure used by an ENT specialist to examine the nose, nasopharynx, throat (pharynx), larynx (voice box), and vocal cords. A thin, flexible endoscope with a tiny camera and light is gently passed through the nose, allowing the doctor to obtain a clear, magnified view of the upper airway on a monitor.

The procedure usually takes 2–5 minutes and is performed in the outpatient clinic. A local anesthetic nasal spray may be used to reduce discomfort. Most patients experience only mild pressure or a brief gagging sensation, and normal activities can usually be resumed immediately after the examination.

An NPL test helps diagnose a wide range of conditions, including persistent hoarseness, chronic cough, throat pain, difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, vocal cord disorders, polyps, nodules, infections, inflammation, and early cancers of the throat or larynx. It provides immediate visual information, enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment without the need for surgery or hospitalization.
